America's college campuses are roiled by debate and controversy over the war between Israel and Hamas, with sometimes violent clashes between student groups. There have been serious incidents at both Stanford and UC Berkeley, as well as at major universities across the country.
But at Berkeley, at least, despite ongoing student walkouts and fierce arguments on Sproul Plaza, two well-known professors on opposing sides of the debate issued a joint statement appealing for peace and civil discourse. We’ve had one of them, Jewish professor of Israel studies Ron Hassner, on air previously to talk specifically about what was going on in the war.
KCBS Radio news anchors Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising and KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern were joined by the other professor, Dr. Hatem Bazian, continuing lecturer in Asian American studies in the department of comparative ethnic studies at Cal and the founder and director of the Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project there, in today's edition of The State of California.
