The old covenant, with its continual animal sacrifices, was reaching its culmination. Soon, Jesus himself would become the final, perfect sacrifice—the ultimate Lamb of God who would pay for all sins once and for all.Mark's Gospel emphasizes that it was late in the day, creating a sense of urgency and transition. Just as the day was ending, so too was the sacrificial system that had been in place for centuries. When Jesus looked around the temple, he saw the limitations of human efforts to atone for sin.
