Jan grew up hoping to be a professional footballer, until a ski accident put an end to his soccer dreams. Although his Dad was into triathlon and did Roth twice, Jan just thought 'he was crazy.' However with his football dreams in tatters, Jan set about trying to learn to walk again via aqua jogging and it turns out the German junior triathlon squad were training in the lane next to him. It was exactly what Jan needed to motivate him to recover from six months on crutches and gave him a new sporting dream.
